Why Can’t My Dog Eat Chocolate?

Hey Woofa’s,

Easter is fast approaching and I’m one of those weird people who does not like Easter Eggs!!!

Shock horror I know, right!

However, Dean would eat them til the 12th of never…………….

And every time Dean eats chocolate, Billy is right there drooling on the floor giving him puppy dog begging eyes!

Needless to say, when Dean has HIS human chocolate we have a container with dog friendly chocolate so Billy doesn’t feel like he’s missing out.

Easter is near and as you’re sitting down to munch on your Easter Eggs and your dog is right beside you with ‘those’ puppy dog eyes – whatever you do DO NOT AND I REPEAT DO NOT give them any.

WHY CAN’T MY DOG EAT CHOCOLATE?

Giving our chocolate to dogs is a big NO NO!

Basically our chocolate is toxic for dogs and can ultimately poison them!!!

You see, our chocolate contains cocoa and cocoa has the compound THEROBROMINE in it and this is what is toxic to your dog.

As humans we can easily handle theobromine, but dogs process it much slower than what we do, allowing it to build up to toxic levels in their system, read here for more info.

The overall effect of chocolate ingestion will obviously depend on the size of your dog and the amount of chocolate they eat (still better to be safe and not give them any at all).

SYMPTOMS TO LOOK FOR IF YOUR DOG DOES EAT CHOCOLATE!!

  • Restlessness
  • Excitement
  • Hyperactivity
  • Nervousness
  • Trembling
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Increased Drinking & Urination
  • Increased Heart Rate
  • Muscle Tremors
  • Seizures

If you’re unsure of what to do if your dog does happen to eat chocolate call your local trusted vet or a 24 hour vet just to be sure.

WHAT CHOCOLATE CAN I GIVE MY DOG FOR EASTER??

The best thing to do before you delve into your own chocolate and face ‘the look’ from your dog, is to go to your local pet store or go on line and buy them some DOG FRIENDLY CHOCOLATE.

This is chocolate made especially for dogs, as in the pic to the left.

You could also look up recipes and make your own Dog Friendly Chocolate Easter Eggs.

Or buy some dog friendly chocolate Easter Eggs from your local pet store or go on line and get ordering some.

Whatever you decide make sure it’s DOG FRIENDLY CHOCOLATE before feeding it to your dog.

This way everyone gets to enjoy their chocolate at Easter.

You can eat your own chocolate guilt free and your fur baby gets to eat theirs safely.

WHAT DOES ALL THIS MEAN?

Easter is nearing and Easter is all about chocolate.

Our dogs love food and each time we eat chocolate they put on begging puppy dog eyes that we find hard to ignore.

OUR human grade chocolate is poison for dogs, that’s why they can’t have it!

Instead, there are many brands of dog friendly chocolate items out there, at your local pet store or on-line.

Let’s make this Easter friendly for everyone.
