Why Can’t I Give My Dog Easter Eggs?

Hey Woofa’s,

Easter is fast approaching and I’m one of those weird people who is not fussed by Easter Eggs!!!  Shock horror I know.

Even as a kid I was never into the Easter Egg Chocolate, my eggs were still in the fridge in June.  My cousin was horrified at the thought and would always end up eating them for me.

I can’t put my finger on it but I just don’t like Easter Egg Chocolate.  The actual design of the eggs is cute don’t get me wrong but to eat them, nope, not for me!!!

However, it’s not to say that I don’t like chocolate all together, that would be crazy indeed lol.

Regardless of whether I like Easter Eggs or not, it’s the time of year where they are everywhere.  And as you’re sitting down to munch on your Easter Eggs and those four legged fur babies are right beside you with ‘those’ puppy dog eyes – whatever you do DO NOT AND I REPEAT DO NOT give them any.

WHY CAN’T I GIVE MY DOG EASTER EGGS?

Giving our chocolate to dogs is a big NO NO!

Basically our chocolate is toxic for dogs and can ultimately poison them!!!

You see chocolate contains cocoa and cocoa has the compound THEROBROMINE in it and this is what is toxic to your dog.

As humans we can easily handle theobromine, but dogs process it much slower than what we do, allowing it to build up to toxic levels in their system, read here for more info.

The overall effect of chocolate ingestion will obviously depend on the size of your dog and the amount of chocolate they eat (still better to be safe and not give them any at all).

SYMPTOMS TO LOOK FOR IF YOUR DOG DOES EAT CHOCOLATE!!

  • Restlessness
  • Excitement
  • Hyperactivity
  • Nervousness
  • Trembling
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Increased Drinking & Urination
  • Increased Heart Rate
  • Muscle Tremors
  • Seizures

If you’re unsure of what to do if your dog does happen to eat chocolate call your local trusted vet or a 24 hour vet just to be sure.

WHAT CAN I GIVE MY FUR BABY FOR EASTER???

Now the best thing to do before you delve into your own chocolate and face ‘the look’ from your fur baby, is to go to your local pet store or go on line and buy them some DOG FRIENDLY CHOCOLATE.

In the pic, this is the chocolate Billy is delving into and it is from our local Pet Barn store.  It is chocolate  made especially for dogs, they come in all sized packs and different flavours.

You could also look up recipes and make your own Dog Friendly Chocolate Easter Eggs or buy some Eggs from your local pet store or again on line.

Whatever you decide make sure it’s DOG FRIENDLY CHOCOLATE before feeding it to your fur kids.

This way everyone gets to enjoy their chocolate at Easter and you can eat your own chocolate guilt free and your fur baby gets to eat theirs safely.

Wishing you all a HAPPY EASTER!
