Watch Out Kangaroos Are About!

Hey Woofa’s,

Kangaroos are on Australia’s National Emblem our Coat of Arms!

I’ve been to zoos and places where you can feed Kangaroos and have never felt threatened by one.

Who would’ve thought they would be capable of taking our dogs??

Now I have heard some stories over the years of Kangaroos taking dogs or attacking them but I didn’t really think it was all that common.

BOY was I wrong.

What prompted me to look into this was a recent story on the News of a guy who punched on with a Kangaroo so he could rescue his dog!!!  WTF!

Then I started researching and it’s a lot more common than what I thought.

I know people think we have Kangaroos hopping down the streets everywhere in Australia but we don’t.

Although in some areas they are more common, rural areas, holiday areas etc.

A friend of mine had a holiday house down the coast at St Georges Basin, and yes they had Kangaroos hopping through the back yard on some days.

Another recent story was of a lady ready to tee off at golf and had a crowd of Kangaroos around watching her.

So yes Kangaroos are about but not EVERYWHERE.

Which prompts me to write this post.

WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR!

  1. If you’re thinking of going away for the Christmas Holidays or any holidays, check your destination and see if there could be Kangaroos hanging around.
  2. Camping grounds, Caravan Parks are some areas where Kangaroos might hang out.
  3. Call ahead to wherever you’re going and ask if it’s a known hang out for Kangaroos, especially if you’re taking your dog with you.
  4. Do not feed Kangaroos who are free to roam.
  5. ALWAYS watch your dog or have them on a lead when in areas that are known to have Kangaroos hanging around.
  6. Kangaroos do get in the water.  When they feel attacked, they will try to drown your dog if it gets close.
  7. Kangaroos have been known to attack people if they get too close trying to retrieve their dog.
  8. If Kangaroos feel like they’re being attacked they will fight back.
  9. Do not allow your dog to go after a Kangaroo.
  10. Keep both your dog and the Kangaroos safe by keeping them far away from each other.
  11. Kangaroos feeling under attack will (and have every right to) fight back.
  12. Kangaroos are fine until they feel under attack.

STORIES OF DOGS BEING ATTACKED BY KANGAROOS – this shit is real!!

Lady takes her dog for a walk, lets the dog off the lead and dog starts barking at the Kangaroo.  Kangaroo feels the need to protect itself.

Man taking his dogs for a walk, one starts barking at a Kangaroo, Kangaroo feels threatened and grabs the dog trying to drown it.

Men save Kangaroo from freezing waters in Canberra.  The reason it’s in there I believe is because people walk their dogs by, it was probably scared.

Woman trying to play golf finds herself the intrigue of a mob of Kangaroos.

What I’ve now learnt is that Kangaroos are fine until they feel under threat.  A dog trying to attack them will make them feel under threat and they will try to protect themselves by taking your dog into water and trying to drown it.

So Keep your Dogs AWAY from them and all should be fine.

WHAT DOES ALL THIS MEAN?

When you are out and about with your dog, do not let them off lead when Kangaroos are about.

A Kangaroo will fight back if they feel under attack, and they have every right to.

A Kangaroo will go to water and try to drown your dog if it feels under attack.

Prevent this scenario by being vigilant and keeping your dogs on a lead when Kangaroos are about.
