New Law For 2024 In UK Banning XL Bully Breeds – WTF?

Hey Woofa’s,

To say I’m appalled by the UK’s decision passing a law to ban XL Bully Breeds is an understatement.

In case you didn’t already know –

As at 31st December 2023 in the UK it is against the law to –

  • sell an XL Bully dog
  • abandon an XL Bully dog or let it stray
  • give away an XL Bully dog
  • breed from an XL Bully dog
  • have an XL Bully in public without a lead and muzzle

From 1 February 2024 it will be a criminal offence to own an XL Bully dog in England and Wales unless your dog has a Certificate of Exemption.

From my reading, the reason for this is due to a concerning rise in attacks and fatalities caused by XL Bully dogs.

The UK government has added this breed to the list of dogs banned under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.

As a dog owner, as an owner of a so called ‘bully breed’ AND as a Dog Groomer I’ve never been afraid of these dogs.

HOWEVER, I’ve also never come across any dog that has been used in a fighting ring.

In all the 17 years of dog grooming many have been bully breeds and NONE of them have tried to bite me or shown any aggression towards me.

Probably because they have been owned by loving caring owners…………….not people who want to use them as weapons!!!!

On top of that, my father used to breed and show Staffordshire Bull Terriers and none of them were ever aggressive towards us – BECAUSE WE NEVER BRED THEM FOR FIGHTING.

FURTHER RULES ON BANNING XL BULLY BREEDS IN THE UK!

Yes you can get a Certificate of Exemption if you own a Bully Breed and must apply for it by 31 January 2024.

To get a Certificate of Exemption you must:

  1. Get third party public liability insurance cover for your dog.
  2. Neuter your dog permanently if it is not already neutered. Read Neutering an XL Bully for when you must have your dog neutered. A vet must confirm if your dog is already neutered.
  3. Pay the £92.40 fee for each dog you want to keep. The fee is not refundable.
  4. Apply for a Certificate of Exemption to keep an XL Bully dog.

To keep an XL Bully dog it must be:

  • microchipped
  • kept on a lead and muzzled at all times when in public
  • kept in a secure place so it cannot escape
  • neutered

As the owner, you must also:

  • be over 16 years old
  • take out third party public liability insurance against your dog injuring other people
  • be able to show the Certificate of Exemption when asked by a police officer or a council dog warden, either at the time or within 5 days.

You know what?  Some of these rules I agree with and SHOULD APPLY TO ALL BREEDS!

All dogs should be mircrochipped, kept on a lead at all times when in public, kept in a secure place at home so they can’t escape and be neutered.

I’m sure all the people who love their XL Bully Breeds are madly applying for the Certificate of Exemption.

What about the Rescue places where these breeds have been abandoned by their so called owners?

RULES FOR DOG RESCUES IN THE UK FOR BULLY BREEDS!

This just breaks my heart even more!

From 31 December 2023, it will be illegal to re-home, sell or transfer ownership of XL Bully dogs. From this date, rescue and re-homing organisations should not re-home XL Bully dogs.

Rescue and re-homing organisations should consider whether the dogs in their care may be XL Bully dogs. This involves checking the dog’s physical characteristics such as its size and height.

Rescue and re-homing organisations can apply for a Certificate of Exemption to keep an XL Bully dog from 31 December. The dog must have been held on or before 31 October 2023. Applications must be sent by 15 January 2024.

Dogs obtained after 31 October 2023

If an XL Bully dog was obtained after 31 October 2023, the rescue or re-homing organisation cannot apply for a Certificate of Exemption.

Compensation

Rescue and re-homing organisations can decide to euthanise an XL Bully dog and claim £100 contribution towards the cost of euthanasia. Compensation must be claimed by 15 March 2024.

ARE YOU FCUKING KIDDING ME?

So poor XL Bully breeds that have done nothing wrong AND have been abandoned by their a-hole owners, have no chance of finding a home but will be  put to sleep?????

OH AND you get money for putting them to sleep FFS!

HUMANS do worse than this and get treated better!!!

I’m sick to my stomach reading this!

WHY AM I SO ANGRY?

Because 99.9% of the time the reason why ANY DOG is aggressive or attacks is from FEAR!

AND because 99.9% of the time it’s not the dog’s fault, it’s generally the way it’s been bred and/or raised.

HUMANS ARE AT FAULT HERE – NOT THE DOGS!

Yet as always humans think they are an all superior being and lets just KILL OFF what we don’t want to face!

There are enough dogs each and every day being put to sleep because HUMANS dump them!

Perfectly good loving dogs being killed at the hands of humans because they can’t be bothered with them anymore!!!

NOW Governments are making decisions to BAN A DOG BREED because of a rise in attacks and fatalities………

Well have they looked at what HUMANS are doing to DOGS and what HUMANS do to other HUMANS???

NO IT’S NOT HAPPENING IN AUSTRALIA BUT IT’S BAD ENOUGH IT’S HAPPENING AT ALL!

When are humans going to take accountability for things that happened because of the way they treated an animal?

WHAT DOES ALL THIS MEAN?

There is a ban on XL Bully Breeds in the UK.

If you are a loving dog owner of an XL Bully Breed you now have to apply for a Certificate of Exemption!

Of XL Bully Breeds that are in Rescues, they pretty much are going to be killed!!

Because of a decision probably made by someone who has never loved and owned an XL Bully Breed.

Am I p!ssed off about this – YOU BET I AM!
