Is Your Dog’s Food Killing Them?

Hey Woofa’s,

Recently in the news there was a worrying story on a Pet Food Brand that was making our Dogs sick some resulting in death!!!!!

This story has been playing over and over in my mind ever since I saw it.

There is a loving family who owned a gorgeous chocolate Labrador, who they adored.  They were feeding him what they thought was a healthy meal each night.  Unbeknown to them, it was that supposedly healthy meal that cost him his life!!!

CLICK HERE TO WATCH THEIR STORY!

Such a tragic story and the scary thing is it can happen to anyone because  Australia doesn’t have any Dog Food Standards or Regulations.

Another recent story in the news was another Pet Food Brand had been down as causing approximately 70 dogs in Victoria to become sick and one police dog having be to put to sleep!!!

What we are feeding our Fur Kids could potentially be killing them?

WHAT IS GOING ON WITH DOG FOOD IN AUSTRALIA?

There are no Dog Food Regulations here in Australia!!

It seems anything and everything can be put into our Dog’s Food and we really don’t have a say in it.

From mould to plastics to potentially anything that could poison our dogs can allegedly be put into our Dog’s food!!

There are NO LAWS to govern safety for our Dog’s Food, only a ‘voluntary standard’!!!  So basically they can volunteer what ‘exactly’ goes into the food if they want to, but they don’t have to!!!

To make matters even worse, if you can prove a certain food has made your pet sick (or worse they have died), it doesn’t mean the Company that makes that dog food is under any obligation to ‘recall’ that food!!!

There is also NO Company, Corporation, or Organisation of any kind to turn to when this does happen.  All you can do is report it to your Vet and they can make a complaint, but that’s it!!!!

We as consumers have nowhere to turn to.

It appears no-one has to be accountable for such consequences their Dog Food can cause.  No-one has to take any responsibility for the poor quality of Dog Food being sold to us.

No-one has to take responsibility for the horrific consequences such poor quality Dog Food has on our Fur Kids!!!

Even some Veterinary Clinics allegedly sold at least one of the Dog Food Brands that caused illness and death in dogs!!!!

DOG FOOD  BRANDS IN THE MEDIA!!!

1 – APPLAWS

2 – BAXTERS

3 – ADVANCED DERMACARE

4 – BENEFUL

The sad thing is these are the only ones that have been reported on!

How many other poor quality Dog Food brands are being sold to us that are causing illnesses and death that we aren’t aware of?

BASIC SYMPTOMS ALLEGEDLY CAUSED BY POOR QUALITY DOG FOOD!

1 – Vomiting

2 – Diarrhoea

3 – Seizures

4 – Paralysis

5 – Megaesophagus

If ignored or gone unnoticed for a long period of time any one of these symptoms can become deadly!

When fed poor quality dog food over a long period of time, we could potentially be causing our dogs slow deaths????

WHAT CAN WE DO?

1 – BE AWARE of what you are feeding your dog everyday.

What’s the quality of the wet food, dry food, the treats, the bones etc that your dog is eating?  Yes they have stronger digestive systems than we do but that doesn’t mean they deserve to be fed poor quality food day in and day out.

And it doesn’t mean that poor quality food isn’t having some sort of effect on them either.

2 – KEEP NOTES on any changes in behaviour in your dog.

This is why it’s important to Know Your Dog in their everyday life, so when something changes you notice.

I.e – take a look at the quality of their poo, is your dog itchy, licking their paws all the time, dry skin, constipated, or suffering from diarrhoea etc?

If that change in behaviour goes on for more than a day then it’d be worth giving your Vet a call.

3 – HAVE AN OPEN AND HONEST conversation with your Vet.

Speak to a trusted Vet on what THEY FEED THEIR DOG.  Ask them –

  • why they choose that dog food;
  • are they paid to endorse that dog food product;
  • what exactly is in that dog food that makes it best for your dog;
  • would that food benefit your dog;
  • why would that food benefit your dog?

A trusted Vet will take into account –

  • your dog’s age;
  • your dog’s weight;
  • your dog’s activity level;
  • your dog’s sensitivities;
  • your budget etc.

Taking all this into consideration you both should be able to come up with a quality diet for your dog.

If you disagree with your Vet there’s always 2nd opinions.

If you’re thinking of changing your dog’s diet do it gradually over a week where you slowly introduce the new food, in small amounts each day.

Again do this and note down if there are any changes, positive or negative ones.

4 – SUPPORT AUSTRALIA’S NEED FOR PET FOOD REGULATION.

CLICK HERE AND GO TO THIS WEBSITE and sign the petition.

Australian Senators, Prime Ministers, all government bodies need to know that we want to keep ALL our pets safe.

We want to have peace of mind that what we are feeding our Dogs (pets) isn’t going to kill them.

WHAT WE FEED BILLY!

Billy gets a raw meat diet of lean beef mince.

We have a variety of cooked vegetables that are safe for dogs, mixed in with his raw mince.

Sometimes we’ll add either rice or small pasta, purely because he is active.  As he ages and isn’t as active the carbs will be minimal if at all.

He gets raw bones that he isn’t able to swallow whole.  They are big enough for him to chew on but not to eat whole.

He does get dry food, Meals For Mutts – Salmon and Sardine Flavour for sensitive skin – to which I’ll be off now to check the contents of a lot more closely.

We put the dry food in his treat ball, so he’s only nibbling on it each day, it’s not part of his full meal content.

Billy and I hope that you found this post informative.
