Happy Australia Day 2023!

Hey Woofa’s,

Happy Australia Day 2023!

I feel like this year is the first year (in a while) that we can go back to normal with our celebrations!

That’s if you choose to celebrate!

Life is starting to feel like the normal is back now (fingers crossed)!

Regardless of what you choose to do on Australia Day, we do get a public holiday!

So what can we do this AUSTRALIA DAY and how can we include our dogs?

WHAT CAN WE DO THIS AUSTRALIA DAY?

Basically the answer to this question is pretty simple – whatever makes you happy!

Celebrate this day doing whatever you want but do it with your dog of course : )

Some ideas to get you thinking about what you may want to do are:

  1. Have an Aussie Day BBQ with family/friends – but cook stuff for your dog too;
  2. Go out to a dog friendly place – for lunch;
  3. Hang out at a dog friendly beach or park;
  4. Stay indoors and watch Aussie movies, with your dog by your side;
  5. Shop online and buy only Aussie Made Goods, with your dog by your side;
  6. Read a book by an Aussie Author, with your dog by your side;
  7. Go to your local Botanical Gardens, take your dog if it’s allowed;
  8. Go on a dog friendly picnic, make sure to pack your dog some food and water too;
  9. Head out on a drive with the family/friends or just you and your pooch;
  10. Just hang out with family/friends and your dog;
  11. If it’s a great day, head to your nearest watering hole and take your dog (if allowed);
  12. Go for a swim in your pool, have your dog join in (only if they want to)…….

There’s a lot of things you can do this Australia Day, even if you see it as just another day, spend it hanging with your dog.

AUSTRALIA DAY FIREWORKS!

I’m personally so over fireworks.

They way they impact our animals is just terrible.  Surely in this day and age we can come up with something better!!

Anyway, generally local Councils will put on Australia Day fun days/nights for everyone, including fireworks.

If your dog doesn’t like fireworks and you’re not going to be home please, please, please make sure that someone can be home with your dog!

Billy hates fireworks so he runs around the house and yard barking until they stop.

AUSTRALIA DAY ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS!

Australia Day is the official National Day of Australia!  It is celebrated annually on 26 January each year.

It marks the anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet of British Ships At Port Jackson, New South Wales and the rising of the flag of Great Britain at Sydney Cove by Governor Arthur Phillip.

However, to various Indigenous Australians (and those sympathetic to their cause) Australia Day is known as ‘Invasion Day’ or ‘Survival Day’!

This is as a protest to what they see as the celebration of an invasion of the continent by Europeans.

Compared to other Countries we are a young Country and we get it wrong sometimes.

All we can do is learn from our ancestor’s mistakes and Do Much Better!

Regardless of your stand on this I found this recent ad about Australia Day, a tad comforting because it’s what we should ALL practice.

THE STORY OF AUSTRALIA!

The message behind the ad is this – This is the Story of Australia – the story of an extraordinary nation.

The Story begins 60,000 years ago. New chapters are written every day. On Australia Day, we reflect on our history, its highs and its lows.

We respect the stories of others. And we celebrate our nation, its achievements and most of all, its people. We’re all part of the story.

WHAT DOES ALL THIS MEAN?

Today is Australia Day, Invasion Day, Survival Day, regardless most of us have a public holiday.

Whether you celebrate the day or not, just do something fun with your dog!
