Should Time Spent With Your Dog Be Mandated?

Hey Woofas,

I was perusing some dog articles, as I do, today and came across one that was rather interesting or disturbing!

I’m not sure which!

Apparently, the ACT (Australian Capital Territory a.k.a Canberra) have updated their Code of Protection For The Welfare of Dogs.

Most would think, ohhh that’s good they’re looking out for the dogs!

However the fact that they have to put this into a Code of Protection for the Welfare of Dogs, is rather disturbing to me.

WHAT’S GOING ON HERE?

According to the article on nine.com.au on their click to read full article website Honey Pets

Under the new guidelines dog owners would have to give their dog “human contact for a reasonable length of time each day, three hours minimum”.

What disturbs me about this is that people have to be told or it has to be mandated that people spend time with their dog!

WTF??

On one hand I see this as a positive for dogs who become neglected, but then I think if people neglect their dog, they don’t deserve to have one.

If people don’t have TIME for a dog then don’t get one!  It’s as simple as that.

Maybe if this is passed then those who do neglect their dog will suffer harsher consequences regarding the law!

Nine Honey Pets did a poll of 563 people – this is some of what was expressed!

55 per cent of those surveyed saying they’re not a fan of the idea.

18 per cent said “it depends”,

13 per cent are supportive of governments setting minimum standards for time spent with dogs.

Another concern was how this would be enforced?

Then it seemed to steam roll into the fact that governments should be worrying about much larger concerns like, cost of living crises, homelessness etc

Others went further into mention that it should be breed specific in how much time certain breeds require.

Some mentioned they don’t have that much time – OMG!  If you can’t spend up to or longer than 3 hours with your dog per day you shouldn’t have one.

Then these stats surprised me also –

Of the 563 people polled,

39 per cent agreed three hours is the minimum amount of human contact time people should have with dogs.

I agree, 3 hours is a bare minimum that should be spent with your dog.  I get that people work, but you also come home and you should be spending time with your dog then.

If you can’t then get off your phone.

19 per cent of participants two hours is the ideal minimum

I disagree that 2 hours is ideal……….definitely needs to be more.

14 per cent said one hour

There is no way that 1 hour per day human contact with your dog is enough.  Most dogs are inside dogs these days how aren’t you spending more than 1 hour with your dog?

Twenty-eight per cent voted “other” but did not specify how much time

Who knows what ‘other’ means?

Then it went on to the quality of that time you spend with your dog over the length of time, which is fair enough.

Are you playing with your dog, are you engaging with your dog or are they just in the room with you and you’re not giving them attention?

Does that including walking your dog?

Some older dogs don’t go for long walks while other younger dogs might need a longer walk.

Does that include going to a dog park, dog beach, or a dog cafe……………….?

The list goes on.

The draft Code of Practice for the Welfare of Dogs in the ACT is open for feedback until 22 August 2025.

WHAT DOES ALL THIS MEAN?

That if you live in the ACT/Canberra and you have a dog.

It may become mandated that the minimum time you spend with your dog is 3 hours per day.

How do you feel about that?
